  博士生導師,現任中國科學院亞熱帶農業生態研究所畜牧健康養殖中心主任，學術委員會副主任，中國共產黨湖南省第九次代表大會代表，湖南省直機關和中國科學院模范共產黨黨員，九三學社全國優秀社員，湖南省政協常委，湖南省海外聯誼會常務理事，湖南省九三學社省委委員，動物營養學國家重點實驗室、生物飼料安全與污染防控國家工程實驗室和中國科學院亞熱帶農業生態系統過程重點實驗室學術委員會委員，國際食品、農業與環境學會常務理事（芬蘭）及Journal of Food, Agriculture & Environment和African Journal of Food Science雜志副主編，International Scholarly Research Network （ISRN） Veterinary Science, Journal of Microbiology and Antimicrobials 和Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal Science等國際雜志編委，，中國畜牧獸醫學會科技專家動物營養學分會常務理事，中國微量元素與食物鏈研究會副理事長，兼任南昌大學博士和博士后導師；在Nucleic Acids Res（IF 7.5）和J Nutr Biochem（IF 4.3）等SCI期刊上發表論文114篇，中文論文190余篇，論文被他人引用了2031次；主編和參編中英文專著6部；獲授權專利10項；克隆并在GenBank注冊了與豬腸道健康相關基因13個。獲省部級以上科技獎勵12項，其中《仔豬腸道健康調控關鍵技術及其在飼料產業化中的應用》，國家科技進步二等獎，排名第一，2010年；《畜禽氮磷代謝調控及安全型飼料配制關鍵技術研究與應用》，國家科技進步二等獎，排名第一，2008；《豬飼料養分回腸末端利用率及有效氨基酸需要量的研究》，國家科技進步三等獎，排名第一，1996；《豬、雞營養參數及配方新技術研究》，國家科技進步二等獎，排名第五，1997年； 1985獲西德馬普學會研究獎學金；1991年獲中國科學院第二屆青年科學家獎；1992年獲國務院政府特殊津貼； 1995年6月被聯合國科教文組織和中國科學院挑選為中國當代科技精英之一；1996年獲英國ORS獎學金；1996年獲Finnfeeds International Ltd研究獎學金。2009年獲大北農第六屆科技成果獎”。

  目前主要借助免疫學、分子生物學和生物技術，與加拿大圭爾夫大學、加拿大農業部食品營養研究中心、德國基因橋股份公司、美國德克薩斯大學、奧本大學、德國家畜生物研究所以及國內大學、研究機構與公司合作研究氨基酸和碳水化合物營養代謝及調控機理和研發功能食品與飼料,（招收動物營養、分子營養、食品營養學碩士、博士研究生和博士后）。
